When S5T began helping small- to medium-sized medical practices to develop and maintain their information systems and digital marketing engines, we noticed a pattern that kept occurring. We found that most of these firms either did not pursue HIPAA compliance at all or only pursued it partially. The reasons were mostly the same across all practices that we've seen, but the primary two are that nobody really understood what they were supposed to be doing, and that practices tend to have a survivor bias because they or no one they know has found themselves on the wrong side of HIPAA compliance before.

When we looked at what options there were out there for our clients to use, nothing really fit. Most of what was on the marketplace was built for much larger organizations or was far too expensive because they paywall most of the features every practice would need, regardless of size. These platforms are also very convoluted and sell organizations things that they don't actually need. Then, when it comes to support, the reviews tell a story of extreme flakiness and frustration from medical organization stakeholders.

Med Practice Core is led by Eddie "Hildy" Hildebrandt, its principal engineer. Before founding Scorpion Five Technologies, Hildy engineered, built and accredited complex information systems for defense and intelligence, leading cross-disciplinary teams composed of everything from engineers and physicists, to software and cloud engineers. At S5T he has helped medical enterprises secure their systems and build compliant digital marketing, alongside systems engineering for compliance-focused software companies.

The idea came to Hildy while working for our client, Prime MD Aesthetics and Wellness. Prime MD needed a HIPAA compliance program alongside a website refresh and maturation for its digital marketing enterprise. Guided by publications like the NIST 800-66 and 800-53, S5T is setting the practice on the path to LegitScript certification. What that engagement showed is how practices truly experience compliance hurdles, and is what Med Practice Core is built around.
